Outgrowing Old Identities

Let’s talk about living in the past… we see it everywhere in the veteran community.
We see the same photos from the same operations, the same stories being told again and again — 10, 15, even 30 years later. Maybe it’s to capture an audience. Maybe it’s to remind people of who you were. Maybe it’s just easier to lean on the version of yourself that you understood back then.

But when it becomes a pattern, when it’s posted over and over, it starts to look like living in the hot zone instead of walking out of it. At some point, you’re not reflecting anymore… you’re replaying. And when you’re replaying, you’re not growing.

To me, that’s being stuck.
That’s what unhealed looks like.
That’s being afraid to become someone beyond the uniform.
Because if you felt like somebody in that moment, and now you don’t know who you are… it makes sense why you cling to it.

But here’s the part that gets to me. And maybe I’m venting, but it’s real: when this becomes the whole identity, it does the community a disservice. We talk about growth and healing, but how can that happen if we’re constantly pulled back into the same snapshot from years ago? At some point, it’s time to recognize that those moments are part of your story, not the entire thing.

And I’m not saying people can’t share their experiences. There’s value in that. There’s honor in that. But when it’s the same operation, the same angle, the same caption on repeat… I have to ask why.
Is it for connection?
For recognition?
For clout?
Because trust me — the veteran community is far from exempt from those behaviors.

And maybe none of this is about them. Maybe it’s about me recognizing who I don’t want to be. Being a veteran is a piece of me, and a meaningful one. But I’m not living there anymore. I’ve got more to my story, and I hope I’m showing that.

So here’s the mindset piece:

Be cautious about who you let influence you.
There are people who genuinely want to see you grow… and there are people who want to keep you circling the same identity because it benefits them.

Know the difference. Protect your energy. And don’t let someone else’s stuck become your ceiling.
