Michelle Lang: Operation Honor: Rural Salute™

Michelle Lang is a Pennsylvania native, military spouse, and founder of Operation Honor: Rural Salute™. She met her husband in 2015 while he was home on block leave. Eight months later, she packed up her life in Pennsylvania and moved to the frozen tundra of Fort Drum in Northern New York.

Michelle took a leap of faith into military life.
“I had zero clue about anything military-related. I had no idea the journey I was about to go on to get to where we are today.”

When Michelle and her husband returned to Pennsylvania in 2019, during his transition back into civilian life, they quickly realized how disconnected rural communities were from veteran services and how hard it was to actually access them.

She admits that her family learned this the hard way, but they were grateful to make it through. “Being from rural America, I grew up bouncing around small towns that were all very patriotic and never gave it a thought as to the needs of veterans living in them.”

Through this transition, she saw firsthand how many needs in rural America were going unmet. And where she saw the need, Michelle rose to the occasion to help meet it.

“Rural Americans give so much to this country and over 25% of our service members come from Rural America. When they return home, they help keep small towns running but we realized that no one was watching out for them. We wanted to make sure rural veterans have connection and access to the same resources urban veterans do because their service matters just as much.”

Operation Honor: Rural Salute™ began in 2021 with a rebrand in 2024. Their mission is to serve rural and small-town military families to ensure that they are supported and connected to the resources and community. Small-town America is full of hardworking people who sometimes travel an hour or two just to see a primary care provider. For veterans, that burden is even heavier.

Michelle is changing that reality through her online resource database, her rural outreach events that she coins as ‘county fairs with the military twist’, and more exciting events on the horizon for 2026.

She reflects on the impact these events have. At the very first event she hosted, a Vietnam veteran approached her to say how thankful he was, because it was the first time he had felt seen and supported since returning home.

These events truly bridge the gap between rural veterans and access to care. At this year’s event, they went a step further and enrolled veterans on-site.

“Over 20 veterans were enrolled that day, and many more had benefits corrected and questions answered. One veteran told me he got more done in 20 minutes than he had gotten done in 30 years. We hear amazing stories every time we do an event. It’s a reminder of how needed connection truly is in rural America.”

With the expansions coming in 2026 Operation Honor: Rural Salute™ is seeking volunteers to support their upcoming events. Sharing their mission on social media is one of the easiest ways to help, and donations can be made directly through their website!

Michelle refuses to let the fear of something not working stop her.

“Too many people think they are failures when they ‘fail’ at something but it’s only because we are so trained to see everyone’s success on social media and their highlight reels. Failures and setbacks are part of the game and if you’re not failing, you’re not trying.”

She adds, “that it’s not failure if you learn something from it”. The second part of resilience, she says, is speaking kindly to yourself after a setback. Michelle started talking to herself the way she talks to her kids, and it changed everything.

We’re often our own harshest critic, even though we’d never speak that way to someone else. Shifting that internal dialogue is essential, because redirections in life will always come.

Michelle now resides in the Fort Bragg area with her husband, 3 sons, 2 dogs and 2 cats. She continues working to improve the lives of veterans in rural and small-town America, making a real impact by helping them access the care they deserve.
