Modern footwear often features elevated heels and narrow toe boxes, which can lead to foot deformities and impaired function over time. Dr. Courtney Conley advocates for zero-drop shoes, which have a 0mm heel-to-toe drop. This design allows the foot to land flat on the ground, promoting a more natural walking pattern and reducing stress on the lower extremities.

High-drop shoes can cause excessive strain on the forefoot and alter our natural gait, leading to issues such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and even knee and back pain. In contrast, zero-drop shoes encourage a more natural alignment of the foot and leg, fostering better balance and stability

Another critical aspect of healthy footwear is having a wide toe box. Conventional shoes often squeeze the toes together, limiting their ability to splay and react to uneven surfaces. This confinement can weaken the intrinsic muscles of the feet over time.

Dr. Conley compares this to wearing mittens on your hands for decades; if you were to do so, your hands would lose their dexterity and strength. Similarly, shoes with narrow toe boxes restrict the natural function of the feet, leading to reduced balance and increased risk of falls.
